[CHARACTER INFO] CHARACTER NAME: Mary Batson, aka, Mary Marvel
FANDOM: DC comics
CHRONOLOGY: Mary is arriving shortly after the events of “I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League!” (So we can all forget that HORRIBLE ANGST of INFINITE CRISIS AND COUNTDOWN ARGH WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO SUE??)

BACKGROUND: After the Justice League has disbanded, Maxwell Lord, a business man with an affinity for super heroes, has taken it upon himself to get a new team going. A more approachable team, a more neighborhood-friendly team! The team that can actually be reached when you're in a pickle! Invited to the team were Elastic Man and his wife Sue, Fire, Captain Atom, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel, having previous experience in working with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Max, flatly refuses. Mary, sensing a chance for a bit of fun, adventure, and Do-Gooding, takes his slot. Thus was born... the SUPERBUDDIES.

On a more personal note, Mary Batson's history is a bit convoluted, as the good folks at DC looove to retconn. I'm going with her “updated” origin here. She is the twin sister of Billy Batson (a.k.a. Captain Marvel), and daughter of archeologist parents. Mary and Billy were separated when Mary was taken with her parents on an archeological dig in Egypt. Billy was left behind with his half-uncle, and the elder Batsons were murdered for an artifact they discovered. Mary was kidnapped by the murderer, and given to Sarah Primm, the murderer's sister. Primm arranges to have Mary illegally adopted by the Bromfields, a wealthy, childless couple. Mary is raised in the lap of luxury, while her forgotten brother is left to the mercy of the streets.

The two meet again in their teen years, after Billy became Captain Marvel, during a spelling bee that Billy was emceeing. Realizing that Mary Bromfield was his long-lost sister, he finds a way to uncover the forged adoption papers. Her favorite toy, shipped to Billy at the time of his parents' murders, comes to life and asks to be taken to Mary. Billy changes into the Captain, flies out to her home to deliver the toy and the forged papers, and changes back into Billy to give them to her in person. He is kidnapped by the thugs that helped forge the papers. Mary finds the package left on her doorstep, and once again her childhood toy transforms and tells her of the power of Shazam. Mary transforms into Mary Marvel, saves Billy, and the two are reunited.

PERSONALITY:
If Mary can be pinned down by one word, it is eager. Eager to prove herself, eager to please, eager to help her fellow man, eager to Do Good. Mary is also quite innocent. To clarify, Mary (at the point from which I am pulling her) is almost willfully innocent. She can, and does, kick the crap out of the bad guys when she needs to, and she does it quite well, but Mary prefers to resolve conflicts without resorting to the “beat the stuffing out of bad guys” approach. She is sweetness and naivete all rolled into one super-powered package. Her favorite director is Walt Disney, she's lactose intolerant, can't swear to save her life, and despite the massive amount of knowledge she obtains when accessing Solomon's power, she still retains the slightly airheaded sweetness. Mary is polite to everyone, including her enemies, and even to Guy Gardner. (Who seems to respect her virginal innocence, but it is Guy, after all.) Most importantly, though, Mary does not shy away from doing the right thing, and she never kills, preferring physical blows to end battles. She is the girl next door, and she helps people for the sake of helping them, not for any fame or glory. She's the kind of person that assists old ladies across the street, sits with them for tea, and listens to their life stories because she wants to, and is genuinely interested. Mary would help people however she could even if she didn't have super powers.

Despite her powers from the wizard Shazam, Mary is still a teenager, and is emotionally immature. She has a tendency to cry and cling, and because of this, she is seen as less capable of making decisions. Mary strongly dislikes it when people don't take her seriously, especially her brother. Slowly, she is learning about sarcasm and sexual humor due to her time hanging around her roommate, Beatriz da Costa, and the rest of the Superbuddies. Especially Booster Gold. This hasn't seemed to diminish her cheery, innocent personality.

As a side note, Mary honestly adores the cheesy Superbuddies jingle and TV ads that L-Ron created.

CLASS: Absolute, 100% Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Mary Marvel
ALTER EGO: Mild-mannered, ridiculously innocent teen Mary Batson.
POWER: S: for the wisdom of Solomon! H: for the strength of Hercules! A: for the stamina of Atlas! Z: for the power of Zeus! A: for the courage of Achilles! M: for the speed of Mercury!

Translation? She's really high up there on the power scale. Mary, like her brother Captain Marvel, draws her powers from the wizard Shazam. When the magic word is uttered, Mary Batson becomes Mary Marvel, and has access to the powers of the gods themselves. She has super strength, super endurance, super speed (and flight), super magical resistance, and super intelligence. Note: Because the ICBINJL series downplayed her intelligence, even as Mary Marvel, I'm likely to do the same. Not that I want her as completely airheaded as they depicted there; I'm trying to go for a happy medium. She'll be a lot more “Pollyanna” when she's not Mary Marvel, and I will try to differentiate between her “Mary Marvel” state and her “Mary Batson” state, most likely with grammar choices.

COMMUNITY POST SAMPLE:
Uhm, hello? Am I doing this right? Okay!

I don't know why I'm here, but Mr. Stark seemed like an awfully nice man! Imagine, gathering all these superheroes in one place to fight crime! He's so noble! This City must be the safest place in the world!

I wonder why it was just me that got picked to come here, though. What about the rest of the Superbuddies? Or the Justice League? I can't really imagine that Batman would want to abandon his city to come to this city.... and if all my friends from my city came to this city, then no one would protect the people back home, so I guess it's just as well. But... what other superheroes are here? Is it only some people that get picked? Ooh, I hope I know people!! And if I don't, well, then I get to make new friends! Maybe I can start my OWN league here!! Oooooh, that would be sooooo cooooooooool!!! :D

...I really hope Billy doesn't get too mad when he finds out I'm gone. :(

THIRD PERSON:
If she had to be perfectly honest (and she always was), Mary Batson was almost glad that Iron Man had zapped her to this weird town. She loved working with the Superbuddies, and she absolutely adored living with Bea, but sometimes, Mary just felt that everyone didn't really treat her like a grown-up. She was Mary Marvel, for Pete's sake! She could take down giant killer puppies with one hand! And still, all of her teammates (and even Billy himself!) talked to her like she was a kid. Everyone tended to forget that when she was Mary Marvel, she had access to all of Solomon's wisdom. It was even there in the magic word! The “S” stood for Solomon, hellooooo?

It just got to be tiring after a while. And Mary never liked feeling disgruntled or upset. She was a naturally upbeat person; being down just didn't sit well with her.

There were a few things bothering her with the whole “zapping act” Mr. Stark pulled, though, and the niggling feeling of worry was hard to let go. Mary wondered if Bea had noticed that Mary was missing. If Bea had, it was a sure thing that she would get Mr. Lord to call up a search party. The tall brunette honestly wasn't sure if Mr. Lord would do so of his own initiative, but Mary was certain that the rest of the Superbuddies would be more than willing to help in a search effort.

Probably.

Well, maybe not Mr. Guy. Even if he did offer, Mary privately doubted that Bea would let him. Worrying about her friends worrying made her stomach hurt a bit. She wondered if Mr. Iron Man could send them a note...

But there really wasn't much she could do about it on this end. Although she hated causing her friends and family anguish, Mary figured the best way to get over it was to try to be happy. So Mary decided to treat this weird journey to Mr. Stark's city like a little vacation. She would prove to everyone back home that she could take care of herself! And that she could be a great heroine! Sure, she had to find a regular job and a place to live, and, yeah, it would get awfully lonely without her brother or her friends, but Mary knew that this was her big chance to show everyone what she could do. Living with Bea had already taught her how to live on her own (mostly), so it wasn't like Mary couldn't take care of herself.

Maybe she would get a bunny!!
